Silicon Carbide industrial R&D and Transfer of Knowledge

International workshop | Oct 26, 2023 | online via Zoom

Oct 26 | 9-12 AM (Stockholm time)

The focus of the workshop is to create exchange related to needs and interests at applied research and industrial R&D level. It is not for scientific presentations. They are not for pure dissemination purpose. Presenters will present their background and motivation for R&D, and bring up a matter of their choice for discussion. Presentations serves to highlight interests and aspects in which we want new collaborations and partnerships. Therefore there is plenty of time allocated for discussion after presentation. The workshop format is suitable for creating interaction within a group of people who are there for the same interest. We must share information in order to get information. The purpose is to share information for new R&D avenues which has applied character (not basic research). Yes, there will be some transfer of knowledge. One can say something without revealing all details. The transfer of knowledge is also why we invite the young generation to listen to presentations. That will build their competence. The workshop will bring added value to the existing SiC business and create new business avenues. The young generation will understand where there are real needs. Therefore the exchange part is essential. Each presenter has about 10 minutes. The recommended distribution in presentations is 5 minutes presentation and 5 minutes for discussion.

The workshop mode is perfect since we want an intimate format. That creates close interaction where discussion is facilitated more than Q&A. This is a part of workshop series that will occur regularly. Those who have presented will be invited at no cost to listen to presenters at coming workshops. In such way we build a community at R&D level. Over time, there will be various outcomes among active participants. The initiator of this workshop format and workshop chair Dr. Mikael Syväjärvi will also act as bridge and facilitate opportunities from his overview of participants fields and interests which he can identify from the different workshops.

Silicon carbide growth and processes to modify SiC material, as well as all types of activities related to the SiC material

We will disseminate the presenters. You can submit abstract (not required, optional). The detailed programme will be given from the submitted topics for presented and more information for each presentation will be taken from abstracts.

This concept is partly an outcome of the transfer of knowledge activities in the EU FET Open project SiComb.

Chair is Dr Mikael Syväjärvi who is a researcher in advanced materials since 1995, entrepreneur since 2005 with start-ups and technology transfer. He has more than 220 publications in wide bandgap crystal growth and semiconductor materials, h-index 35; more than 4750 citations. He has experience in PVT bulk growth of hexagonal SiC, cubic silicon carbide PVT (towards) bulk growth, liquid phase epitaxy, Fast Sublimation Growth Process – FSGP (patented and technology transfer to international company in 2010). He initiated the research in Europe in fluorescent silicon carbide as novel light emitting material for general lighting in collaboration with Meijo University (Satoshi Kamiyama, Isamu Akasaki, etc). He also initiated the first collaboration in Europe on cubic silicon carbide for optoelectronic applications. That develo¨pment of cubic silicon carbide material also initiated development in solar driven water splitting for hydrogen generation (PI J. Sun). He developed growth of graphene on silicon carbide since 2005 (patented and spinoff company in 2011) as well as surface modification thereof, etc.

Dr. Syväjärvi has experience from Swedish national innovation programmes and regional development in European context. He is active in training and courses for research to business, competence building for research and student careers, and sharing knowledge to the youth. He is founder of Alminica AB that is active in innovation capacity. The company has ICM Research Institute as research line. He is a visiting Professor of Advanced Industrial Materials Innovation at University of Lincoln (UK). See CV below and full experience here. Feel free to contact for ideas and collaborations.
